"How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
It would chuck as much as a woodchuck could if a woodchuck could chuck wood."
- Children's nursery rhyme

The groundhog or woodchuck is a type of rodent, a marmot or ground squirrel. Groundhogs live across North America and can even be seen in urban areas. They can weigh 6 kg (13 lbs) and feed on plants.

In the United States and Canada, legend has it that the groundhog can predict the weather. Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2. It is thought that if the animal sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

This is based on superstitions from the Middle Ages in Europe in which the bear or badger emerged from hibernation - if the weather was sunny and he saw his shadow, winter continued. If it were cloudy, the weather would be mild.

This tradition was famously portrayed in the 1993 film Groundhog Day. Groundhogs also feature as Geico insurance mascots in popular commercials in which the woodchucks are actually "chucking" or throwing pieces of wood.

Various answers have been given to the "How Much Wood?" nursery rhyme, including 700 pounds (320 kg) or 362 cubic cm (22 cubic inches) of wood.
